How to Improve Your Swimming Technique for Better Results

As a swimmer, whether you’re just starting or have been swimming for a while, improving your technique can take your skills to the next level. At Swim Bright, I’m here to help you refine your technique and make every stroke count. In this post, I’ll share some key tips and techniques that will help you swim smarter, not harder.

1. Focus on Your Body Position

Proper body position is the foundation of good swimming technique. To swim efficiently, your body should remain flat and horizontal in the water. Imagine yourself as a streamlined object, with your head in line with your spine and a slight body roll for freestyle or backstroke. Keep your core engaged to prevent drag, and try to minimize unnecessary movements to conserve energy.

2. Improve Your Breathing Technique

Breathing can often be a challenge for swimmers, especially beginners. However, mastering your breathing is crucial for swimming efficiently. In freestyle, focus on rotating your head to the side to take a breath without lifting it too high out of the water. Avoid holding your breath, as this can lead to tension. Instead, exhale slowly and continuously under the water and take quick, controlled breaths when you need air.

3. Use Drills to Refine Your Strokes

Drills are one of the best ways to improve swimming technique. Specific drills target different aspects of your stroke and allow you to focus on key movements in isolation. For example, “catch-up” drills can improve your freestyle stroke by forcing you to focus on one arm at a time, helping with body rotation and balance. “Single-arm” backstroke drills can help you build strength and stroke mechanics. Regularly incorporating drills into your training will help you break bad habits and develop better form.

4. Work on Your Kicking

Kicking plays an essential role in swimming, especially in strokes like freestyle and backstroke. The key to an effective kick is maintaining a steady, rhythmic motion. Keep your legs straight but not rigid, with small, quick movements from your hips. Avoid splashing excessively, as this can waste energy. If you find your legs sinking, focus on keeping your core engaged to maintain a more horizontal position.

5. Build Strength and Endurance

Good technique alone won’t take you far without strength and endurance to back it up. To improve both, incorporate strength training and cardiovascular workouts into your routine. Dryland exercises, such as planks, push-ups, and squats, can help build the muscles necessary for strong, efficient swimming. Additionally, gradually increasing your swim distances and intervals can help improve your stamina, allowing you to maintain good form for longer periods.

6. Get Feedback from a Coach

One of the best ways to improve your swimming technique is to work with a coach who can give you personalized feedback. At Swim Bright, I offer one-on-one lessons to analyze your stroke and pinpoint areas for improvement. With individualized guidance, you can quickly identify mistakes and make the necessary adjustments to enhance your performance.
